Strong collapse of vehicle sales in March due to the pandemic

As expected with the one that is falling, vehicle sales in Spain have plummeted. Car and SUV registrations have dropped 69,3% despite the state of alarm being decreed on March 14.

The registrations of passenger cars and SUVs in Spain reached a volume of 37.644 units during the past month of March, which represents a collapse of 69,3% in the comparison with the 122.659 units delivered in that month of the previous year, according to data from the associations of manufacturers (Anfac), dealers (Faconauto) and sellers (Ganvam).

The sharp fall experienced in car sales in March is explained by the expansion of the coronavirus and the measures adopted by the Government, among which the limitation of population mobility stands out, which led to the closure of dealerships and the practical stoppage of the automotive market.

The data, in addition, occurs with half a month of confinement (March 14), with which most of the sales will have been concentrated in the first days of the month when the state of alarm had not yet been decreed.

Unparalleled fall

Given these data, Anfac's Director of Communication, Noemi Navas, affirmed that the sales figures for March are "unparalleled" and pointed out that in Anfac they consider that it is possible to return quickly to the situation prior to this crisis. "We are going to need a" crash plan "to relaunch the sector that includes specific measures for the automotive sector and that serves to quickly recover the market and production," he said.

For his part, Faconauto's Director of Communication, Raúl Morales, described the commercial record recorded last month as "a historical disaster" and he foresees, with dealerships closed, a "non-existent market or one with falls of close to 90%" both next months.

From Ganvam, the director of Communication, Tania Puche, explained that the stoppage of activity due to the coronavirus has made daily registrations stand at just 300 units a day during the state of alarm. "Taking into account that distribution networks operate with margins of less than 1% on turnover, this situation, logically, means that the year is already lost, with the consequences that this will have on employment," he said.

To all this, we must add the ERTE numbers within the automotive sector. After all manufacturers with production in Spain have submitted their regulatory dossiers, the rest of the automotive sector - one of the most affected by the Covid-19 crisis - has done the same. So much so that Faconauto estimates that the impact on dealers will mean the temporary suspension of employment for 150.000 people.
